Troop 86 has been an active, adventure-oriented Boy Scout Troop since 1975. Troop 86 has worked very hard to maintain a strong scouting program based on the principles of BSA founder, General Robert Baden-Powell, who emphasized the value of “boy-led” experiences. The Troop 86 Scouting program strives to provide a versatile program that will aid in transforming boys into responsible young men with high moral character, integrity, and self-confidence.
Troop 86 has a commitment to offering a wide-ranging mix of outings and activities to build both Scout skills and life skills, including:
Weekly troop meetings on Monday evenings from 7-8 PM at East Brentwood Presbyterian Church
Monthly weekend outings, which include camping, hiking, canoeing, climbing, rappelling and other activities.
Week-long Boy Scout camp located in TN, KY, AL, and more.
Week-long high-adventure outing for rising 6th graders and older
BSA High Adventure Bases for older Troop 86 Scouts (14 yrs and up)
Participation
We highly encourage regular Scout attendance at meetings and outings because of the impact these activities have on rank advancement, merit badge instruction, and the ability to participate in leadership positions. The troop understands that Scouts are involved in other activities in school, church, and sports that will sometimes take precedence over troop activities. Scouts who attend regularly will get more out of the program and tend to advance through the ranks at a steady pace.
The troop program is planned around advancement opportunities. Most troop meetings have a skill-teaching period used for training and practicing Scout skills. In addition, most outings provide the opportunity to use learned skills and to demonstrate leadership in a variety of ways.
Scouts pursue and earn merit badges at summer camp, during one-day merit badge universities, or during troop meetings with adult counselors.
The troop holds a Court of Honor multiple times a year to recognize the Scouts’ achievements.
The cost for monthly troop outings and other activities is paid by those Scouts participating. The cost of operations and equipment is covered primarily by our annual spring geranium sale. Each Scout is expected to sell a minimum number of flowers. For those Scouts who sell more than the minimum number of flowers, a good portion of the proceeds of the additional sales goes into their individual Scout accounts. This money is used to offset Scout activity fees (annual registration, summer camp, high-adventure trips, merit badge universities and monthly outings).
We encourage all prospective Scouts to visit us at one of our troop meetings. As noted above, we meet most Mondays (excluding holidays) at the East Brentwood Presbyterian Church.
